Back in March 2019, MRC PROMO caught up with Vancouver producer, selector, and underground curator DJ Chong Wizard for an exclusive Q&A Interview. Back then, he was laying the groundwork with thematic underground releases like his Power Stone and Reality Stone tapes, pushing independent physical media.
Rewinding the Tape…
During our 2019 interview, Chong broke down his transition from rocking clubs and live sets to locking into full-time producer and executive producer mode, focusing on creating new soundscapes over playing the traditional live-circuit loop. His dedication to what he does is fully realized on his recent blockbuster LP, ***VIDEO TAPE CLUB***, a project styled around the nostalgic, gritty art of cult-classic VHS tape collecting.
While the original full-length record and radio edits brought together an elite underground roster featuring Tha God Fahim, Estee Nack, Open Mike Eagle, E L U C I D, Myka 9, and Chris Crack, Chong has officially dropped the raw, unadulterated VIDEO TAPE CLUB [instrumentals] for the purists and sample sleuths.
Behind the Board
Mixed and mastered by Ro Data with layout and illustration by Paul Rentler, the 10-track instrumental run highlights the intricate, cinematic chops that define the Chong Wizard catalog:
- “Snake In The Eagle’s Shadow” features organic fretwork from Scotty Metz alongside rich string arrangements by Katie Jacoby.
- Heavy low-end frequencies on “Head Cleaner” and “The Long Goodbye” are driven by bassist Adi Bop.
True to the independent game we highlighted years ago, Chong Wizard Records is dedicaticated to that classic gritty sound and physical media preservation, pushing limited-edition vinyl variants, cassettes, and CDs that vanish into collector hands almost as fast as they drop.
