On November 9, 1993, the landscape of music changed forever when Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) was unleashed upon the world, delivering landmark tracks such as “Protect Ya Neck,” “C.R.E.A.M.,” and “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta F’ Wit.” As the group approached the 30th anniversary of that monumental release, Wu-Tang Clan once again demonstrated its spirit of innovation with the arrival of THE WU-TANG CLAN: LEGACY.
THE WU-TANG CLAN: LEGACY continues Wu-Tang’s tradition of redefining music and art. In 2015, the group sold a single copy of Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, their seventh studio album, for $2 million, making it the most expensive work of musical art ever sold. In 2021, the piece was resold for more than $4 million.
Only 36 copies of THE WU-TANG CLAN: LEGACY will be produced, with one edition auctioned through Sotheby’s. This 300-plus-page coffee table book is housed within a custom chamber, chronicling the group’s extraordinary history while pushing their legacy into the future.
Created in tribute to Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), sculptor Gethin Jones—a protégé of renowned British sculptor Sir Antony Gormley, creator of the Angel of the North—designed the chamber that encases each book.
The chamber itself is handmade by noted blacksmith and visual artist Warren Holzman of Holzman Iron Studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
RZA summed it up best:
“Items dating back hundreds, even thousands of years have graced the floors of Sotheby’s. It’s great that in our own lifetime, we were able to create something that will also grace these floors and be shared with the world.”
The 36 bronze-encrusted, 400-pound black steel chambers, guided by the vision of Wu-Tang Management founder and CEO John “Mook” Gibbons, draw inspiration from ancient history and the bronze ritual vessels of the Zhou Dynasty, whose first ruler was King Wu-Wang.
The chambers feature spun mild steel bowls, while the raised ridges, base, and Wu-Tang logo are finished in solid brushed brass. Pre-orders for the artwork began on Friday, December 16, 2022, at 3 PM ET.
Inside each chamber is a volume filled with rare and previously unseen photographs documenting the journey of the Wu-Tang Clan. THE WU-TANG CLAN: LEGACY explores the group’s origins, history, and the individual paths of its members.
This meticulously assembled publication honors not only the members of Wu-Tang Clan, but also the executives, affiliates, family members, and pivotal figures who helped shape the group’s story and bring the LEGACY book to life.
The carefully curated images come from acclaimed photographers as well as family and friends of the Wu-Tang Clan. Each book is printed, bound, and hand-stitched in Italy using premium leather and materials. Every copy is signed, numbered, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
Publisher Andy Cantillon, co-founder of Art of Publishing and a respected photographer, worked closely with Gibbons to create this extraordinary project.
“From the slums of Shaolin to the floors of Sotheby’s—Wu-Tang: Witty, Unpredictable, Talent and Natural Game. No other MCs can claim the same. WU-TANG Baby!” — John “Mook” Gibbons
