Jacob the Sleepy Kintsugi Production
The latest release, Jacob the Sleepy Kintsugi, was recorded entirely during a trip through Japan. Utilizing the portable power of the Ableton Move, Amsterdam-based producer Jacob the Sleepy managed to capture his surroundings, blending lo-fi and boombap.

Jacob the Sleepy is a 15-year hip-hop veteran who has spent over a decade perfecting his craft. Known for his versatility and collaborations with artists like Karsu, he took a minimalist approach to this project. By stepping away from the traditional studio setting and embracing a “DAWless” workflow, the Jacob the Sleepy Kintsugi project feels more organic and spontaneous than his previous works.

The title itself, Kintsugi, refers to the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold—a fitting metaphor for the way Jacob pieces together dusty samples and gritty drums to create something beautiful and new.

For gear heads and producers, the technical side of Jacob the Sleepy Kintsugi is fascinating. The Ableton Move allowed Jacob to sample directly from his environment in Japan, ensuring that every track has a unique, atmospheric “analog feel.” The result is a 6-track project that sounds cinematic yet grounded in the foundational elements of boombap.
