In this interview Justis shares a little about the book.. his process of putting the project together, writing tips and some of his favorite past time reads.
Peace Justis Hype, for those who aren’t familiar with you where’s home?
Peace and thank you kindly for this interview. Home is Brooklyn NY.
What inspired you to write this book?
As for the inspiration, I have personally experienced alot during my lifetime. Some very serious experiences and others I thought would be highly relatable. I always loved books and I’ve been writing poetry and songs since i was about ten so I thought it would be a good idea to actually write a book.
Who is Kita Alexander?? Is she real lol?
Kita Alexander is a fictional character lol!!
How did you select the names of your characters?
Each character is based on a person or persons I encountered throughout my life. I came up with the names randomly by using a first or last name from people i know or have met that somehow matches the character.
How much of the story is real and how much was made up??
The story is completely fictional however it has some very real situations I have either experienced personally or know of through someone close that i could relate to.. I would say 60% is fiction and 40% is real.
How long did it take you to write the book and do you believe in writer’s block? How do you overcome it?
It took me about 6 1/2 years to complete the book mainly because i knew nothing about writing a book or publishing. I had to teach myself everything. I definitely know writers block exists. I think everyone has their own process but my best advice is if it doesn’t come naturally just leave it alone until the thoughts begin to flow.
Most difficult part of putting a book (total package) together start to finish in your opinion?
The most difficult part for me was actually finishing the book’s theme making it established. The editing, cover design and formatting were all a challenge for me. When putting a story together i think its important to have a vision of the theme, the messages you are try to convey and the audience you are looking to engage.
How are you marketing the book and what are your goals for “A Broken Arrow” will there be a part two??
Thus far I’ve mainly used social media as the main marketing tool for this book. I have a few book signing events in the works as well as a soundtrack release that will allow me to cross brand and promote the book with music. I would like to eventually see this story transformed into a movie. A part 2 is very possible. I’ve gotten alot of positive reviews thus far as well as requests for a sequel.
What other authors do you read to help you become a better writer?
“Makes Me Wanna Holler” by Nathan McCall and “Coldest Winter” by Sistah Souljah were two definite influences.
Last words of advice?
If your thinking about writing a book, just do it. Be patient with yourself. Never put yourself on the clock to finish. Take as long as necessary. Research self publishing. Create a marketing plan and stick with it. Thank you kindly.
