Meet NC based rapper/ model /author emcee Venomiss. She recently finished up a new video for a track called “I Keep Thinkin’ about you” dropping later this month. The track is the third single from her new LP “No Favors, No Regrets, No Apologies” available now on most digital platforms. In this interview she dropsjewels about female rappers, her recent tour/shows with emcees she grew up listening to and more.
Peace Venomiss where’s home?
I’m Blessed, I have two homes. Home is where my heart is. I’m from New Jersey originally born and raised…all my family is there and I go often still. But in the past 5 years, I eventually moved to Raleigh, NC. North Carolina has really embraced me in the music scene and given me a lot of growing room as an artist.
How long have you been rapping?
I’ve been rapping all of my life… I don’t remember not rapping. I would say I was about 16 when it first occurred to me it was something I actually wanted to do as a life path.
What’s the concept behind “Inception”?
Inception is a song about being in a relationship with someone who is single, lol. The song is about the mixed signals, the lack of commitment, the lack of complete answers, the back and forth, the confusion…. the frustration… all of that emotion that goes along with that type of situation.
Any other new music projects we should know about?
“No Favors, No Regrets, No Apologies” my third studio album is out for sale now on all platforms and available for stream on great platforms like Pandora, Deezer, Tidal, and Spotify. Just wrapped up another video from the album “I Keep Thinkin’ about you” which will be dropping later in the month.
After featuring on the Youtube Platform Grind Mode Cypher in January alongside battle rap legend Blind Fury, I’ll be returning to the platform in late September. I have a cypher coming out with battle rap legends Marv Won and Chilla Jones in the upcoming weeks, and I am back in the studio working on my fourth album… Wokrking!
Shows or tours coming up?
I just wrapped up tour dates with Caskey, Devin The Dude and I have dates coming up with R.A The Rugged Man, Slum Village and D12, and i’m planning some international shows for the top of 2020. You just never know where I’m going to turn up but I keep the Events section on my website completely up to the minute accurate, so visit my website to keep up with me or my Instagram and Facebook Pages: @Itsvenomiss.
Your thought’s on Jermaine Dupree saying most female rappers rap about being strippers?
I think we are over sensitive in today’s market. I don’t think there was anything wrong with what he said. Many rappers coming out now used to dance. Also, I think that there is little variety in content/ subject matter because many of the female rappers out now follow the same formula.
In the 90’s and 2000’s you had different styles of female rappers sharing the light. Now it seems media outlets only speak on the ones who fit a certain criteria. I believe there is a yin and a yang. You need sexy female rappers just as much as you need lyrical ones. I also believe it really downplays the potential of female artists to only show one type of artist, its like saying “you’re only valuable if you fit in our box” and there’s so many different types of female rappers for that to be true.
What do you hope people take away from your music?
I hope that people take away that you can have Brains, Beauty and Bars. You don’t need to water yourself down in order to be sexy. You don’t need to forfeit your intelligence to please the masses and I hope that people also have a good time listening to my music.
Anything great or outstanding happen to you within the last month you’d like to share?
This entire year has been the best thing that has happened to me. From getting 175k views alongside a battle rapper I grew up watching, to performing in front of thousands at different events, traveling on the road for events, I got to do a major radio interview in New York City at Power 105.1 FM … Done television… I’ve grown so much as an artist this year and passed all my goals for this year.
Goals for the rest of 2019?
To write and record a classic.
Last song you had on repeat?
Solange – “Cranes in The Sky”.
Any hidden talents?
I write stories as well. I prefer to write thrillers and horror like Stephen King.
Shout outs or last words??
Shout out first and foremost to anyone who has supported me and rocked with my music… Make sure you check out my music online, Its a breath of fresh air from today’s repetition and you won’t be disappointed. Find me on Twitter, IG and Facebook and thanks for having me!
